Hoa Lu was the capital of the ancient kingdom Dai Co Viet, which dates back to the 10th century. Although it’s largely destroyed now, the Hoang Long river and the limestone mountains that border the ancient capital used to provide effective natural fortifications for the citadel. It is considered to be the first capital of feudal Vietnam.
It’s located 15 km from the center of Tam Coc, so you can easily reach it by bike or on a scooter (~100.000 VND/day). Riding around Ninh Binh is much safer than in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh as there is not so much traffic and the roads are in general wide and in a good state. Biking in particular is very suitable as the region is completely flat. Once you reach the entrance, many locals will offer their surveillance service to you so you can leave the scooter/bike on their land in exchange for 10.000 VND. Otherwise you can argue with them and leave the vehicle in the middle of nowhere for free (at your own risk).
The opening hours are from 07:00 to 16:00 and the entrance fee is 20.000 VND per person. Once you are there, you will find the temple of Emperor Dinh Tien Hoang and the temple of Emperor Le Dai Hanh. Most of the people only visit the first one and overlook the second one, which is a bit smaller but similar and still very enchanting. You can visit the whole enclosure in one hour more or less.
The Hoa Lu festival is an annual celebration that takes place in the citadel. It honors Dinh Bo Linh, a monarch that united the country and founded Vietnam’s first feudal dynasty, the Dinh dynasty. It takes place from the 6th to the 9th of March, and it consists of palanquin processions, incense burning, water lanterns and traditional music, dance and games.
If you are around, it’s a quick visit that you can’t miss.
