Phu Quoc is famous, among others, for its production of high-quality pearls. The tropical climate as well as the geography make it a suitable environment for pearl farming. Additionally, the art of pearl farming has been passed down through generations of local fishermen and farmers in Phu Quoc, developing techniques for raising oysters and cultivating pearls adapted to the local conditions.
Ngoc Hien Pearl Farm is one of the many pearl farms located on the island of Phu Quoc. It’s a popular tourist destination where visitors can learn about the process of pearl farming and purchase high-quality pearls.
It’s located on the west coast, near the airport (here). The best way to get there is on a scooter. Once you're there, you can leave it for free in the parking spot designated for motorcycles.
In Ngoc Hien, you have the possibility to get a tour around the shop and the museum. Guides will welcome you and offer you a 5 to 10 minutes free tour where they will explain the process of pearl farming. During the visit, you will also get to see coral fossils, ancient ceramics recovered from shipwrecks of the area, and you will observe craftsmen carving thousand years-old giant shells collected in the deep sea. If you are lucky, you can even get a live demonstration of how they extract a pearl from an alive oyster. There is a significant amount of staff, so the tours are made in very small groups.
After the tour, you will walk through the store where several sales associates will follow you patiently, waiting for you to tell them which piece of jewelry you want. You don’t have to buy anything, in fact, they are luxury products, so the prices are incredibly high.
The process of pearl farming is interesting. The tour is quite short and the guide explains everything too quickly.
