The temple of Literature is one of the most important monuments in Hanoi due to its rich history. It was the first national university, established in 1070. Nowadays, it’s considered a symbol of Vietnamese culture and education and it’s dedicated to worship the Chinese philosopher Confucius.
The entrance fee is 30.000 VND. The explanations are scarce, so if you want to know about it, you should get an audio guide (50.000 VND). Depending on the moment of the day, it can get very crowded.
It consists of several courtyards, buildings, and temples, where you will find many halls and altars to worship Confucius. You will also see a pond and a series of stone stelae dedicated to illustrious doctors that market the temple’s history by passing the royal exams. Each stela is standing on a carved turtle, one of the four sacred animals of Vietnam that symbolizes wisdom and longevity.
If you are in a rush, you can visit the enclosure in 30 minutes. However, you can spend a few hours taking a stroll, especially with the audioguide.
One of the most iconic features of the Temple of Literature is the Well of Heavenly Clarity, a large well located in the second courtyard. According to a legend, the kings used the water from this well to wash the inkstones of the royal exams, symbolizing the purity and sanctity of knowledge.
It’s one of the most essential places in Hanoi; it’s a must-see.
