Damianos cave is a cave located in the southwest of Zakynthos, very close to the small local village called Agalas. In addition to the cave, a couple of restaurants with sunset views are featured.
How to get there
It takes about 30 minutes by car from Zakynthos town. The roads are quite good, although as you get closer to the location, they become narrower and more winding. However, they are perfectly paved, so driving with a bit of caution should not pose any problems.
You can park You can park in this parking lot (here) for free. The cave is a five-minute walk down a path.
Damianos cave
The cave itself consists of two holes, one above the other. The one at the base is the only one accessible and is about 15 meters deep.
Legend has it that Damianos was the protector lord of the village of Agalas. He fought against the dragon Andronios and defeated him, forcing him to dig 12 wells as punishment. Damianos watched from this cave as the dragon did his task until one day, the dragon rebelled against the village and Damianos killed him. It is said that the dragon's fossils are still in this cave.
It is not a place that deserves special mention. After all, they are just two holes in a wall, which in high season can even be dirty. You can visit it if you are passing by, but we do not recommend adding it to your list of must-sees.
In addition to the cave, there are a couple of Greek restaurants and a viewpoint from where you can watch the sunset. Again, it is not something spectacular.
It is not something incredible. If you are short on time, you can skip it.
