Echentive Beach is a black sand and volcanic stone beach. The most striking feature is a series of pools located to the right of the beach, known as charcos de Echentive. These pools have a peculiar color, and together with the cliffs and lava walls , they create a unique landscape.
Echentive Beach and Pools
The beach stretches about 230 meters long and 75 meters wide. It is mostly made up of rocks and black sand. The beach was formed by the eruption of the Teneguía volcano in 1971.
The pools have a turquoise blue color that stands out in the volcanic landscape, surrounded by cliffs, walls, and lava-covered ground. Depending on the tides, you’ll find more or less water. They are well sheltered, so even on windy days with waves, you can enjoy a swim. It is recommended to wear water shoes.
This spot has gained considerable popularity in recent years. Try to avoid visiting on weekends, as it tends to be more crowded.
As a curious fact, there is an underwater cemetery next to the beach. It consists of a series of crosses known as Las Cruces de Malpique, which were submerged in 2000 as part of a tribute to Jesuits who were murdered by French pirates in 1570.
Echentive is located very near to the Sacred Spring of Fuente Santa. Este manantial fue sepultado en la erupción del Volcán San Antonio en el año 1677. Las aguas de esta fuente se le atribuían propiedades sanadoras, acudiendo personas de todo el mundo.
Nearby
Around the area, the Salinas de Fuencaliente stand out. It is a very picturesque place where the contrasts of colors between the white of the salt, the black of the volcanic soil, and the blue of the sea create a spectacular and unique view in the Canary archipelago.
It’s a rather particular place. Well worth a visit.
