The Cruz del Castillo viewpoint is a little-known spot, notable for the large pine tree that stands atop a small promontory right beside the road, which hides an interesting story.
How to get there
It’s located in the northern part of the island, at the junction between the LP-1 and LP-109 roads, in the municipality of Garafía, about 1 hour and 10 minutes by car from Santa Cruz de La Palma. The road is in good condition, so getting there shouldn’t be a problem. You can park directly at the viewpoint, though space is quite limited.
Cruz del Castillo viewpoint
From the viewpoint, in addition to the popular pine tree, you’ll have views of the Garafía Pine Forest Integral Natural Reserve and the surrounding mountains, being able to see the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory.
The story of the pine dates back to the construction of the LP-1 road. At the time, there was controversy surrounding the tree, as there were suggestions to cut it down for road safety reasons. However, the Garafía townspeople fought tooth and nail to protect it, eventually building a protective wall around the tree. Today, the pine is so important that it even features on the official coat of arms of Garafía. (You can find this information on the informational panels at the viewpoint).
It’s not special at all… but if you’re passing by, it’s worth a quick stop.
