Itanos Beach is located just 2 km north of Vai Beach, on the eastern coast of Crete. It is a small sandy beach (with some areas covered by stones), much less popular than Vai, making it an excellent alternative during the high season.

The roads are good, so you can make it even with a Fiat Punto. There is a dirt parking lot 300 meters from the beach where you can leave your car (here).

The beach is much quieter than Vai and its neighbor, Erimoupolis Beach. It is sheltered, and the crystal-clear water stands out. Snorkeling allows you to observe interesting rock formations and some remnants of the ancient city of Itanos, so we recommend you to bring a snorkel mask and explore underwater.

As mentioned, there are some areas with many stones, especially at the water's entrance. We recommend using water shoes, as it can be a bit slippery and uncomfortable.

Unlike Vai, it's a completely untouched beach. You won't find umbrellas, sunbeds, or anything like that. The only shade available is provided by several trees and palm trees on the beach itself. You'll need to bring your own food and drinks since, as there are no restaurants or beach bars there. In addition, you should be aware that some people practice nudism there.

Currently, archaeological work is still being carried out in the area, uncovering more parts of ancient Itanos. In fact, to the north of the beach, you'll find the archaeological site of Itanos (entrance is free).

If Vai Beach is too crowded, Itanos is a great alternative to relax.
