Kalypso Beach is located in the Kalypso resort, situated in southern Crete, less than a 10-minute drive from Plakias. Despite being a resort, anyone can access the bathing area for free..
It is a picturesque place where you can find a small beach (30 square meters) and cement platforms with sunbeds and umbrellas. In addition to the vertical rocky walls next to the beach, one of the highlights of the location was a beautiful hanging bridge that used to connect this wall with the sunbed area. This bridge is not there anymore, so do not rely on the photos you see on the internet.
You can get in the sea either from the beach or from a couple of stairs located in the sunbed area. Thanks to the rock walls, it is sheltered against waves and wind, making it ideal for enjoying a swim in its turquoise water. Furthermore, its rocky bottom makes it a great snorkel spot.
The roads to the resort are good. At the entrance you will find some spots where you can park the car. As we mentioned before, no admission fee is required to access the beach; you just need to cross through the resort to reach it. However, you will have to pay for using the sunbeds and the umbrellas.
There are a couple of hiking routes near the resort. In fact, you can even reach Kalypso from Plakias by following the cliff edge in approximately 40 minutes. Additionally, there is a viewpoint on the other side of the beach that can be accessed via stairs.
It’s not crowded. It depends on the season you go as most of the people who visit this place are guests of the resort.
It can be a bit disappointing. The view from the viewpoint is beautiful, but keep in mind that the typical bridge no longer exists.
