Voulisma is a very popular 700 m long beach made of soft fine grained sand. However, the easthest part of the beach is covered by big stones.
It’s located 15 minutes south of Agios Nikolaos, and 1h east of Heraklion. Roads are good, so you can make it even with a Fiat Punto. If you don’t find any free spot in the dirt parking lot (here), you can also leave the car on the side of the main road (here).
Snorkeling is good in the rocky area. Following the rocky wall on the right (facing the sea), you will find an interesting underwater landscape as well as very abundant marine fauna. On the rest of the beach there is almost nothing due to its sandy bottom.
There are a couple of beach bars with food and cocktail service directly on the beach. They also offer sunbeds and umbrellas for 10€ (20€ the luxurious ones). Apart from this, you won’t find more shade. Additionally, on the beach it's also offered some other facilities such as showers and toilets or water sports (jetski, paddle surf, kayak…).
The narrow strip of sand and the crystal clear water make it a picturesque beach. However, in the high season It’s full of people. If it’s too windy or wavy, the water might be no so clear, but you can go to the small beach at the west which is very sheltered. Another drawback is that depending on the currents, there might be some micro plastics on the shore or in the water.
The sandy area might get very crowded, try to go early in the morning or late in the afternoon, otherwise it will be full.
