Charco Azul is a medium-sized natural pool, protected from the waves, and adapted for public enjoyment through the construction of stairs, pathways, and protective walls.
How to get there
It’s located in the northeast of the island, 30 minutes by car from Santa Cruz de La Palma. The roads are in good condition, and the final stretch is quite scenic, surrounded entirely by banana plantations. However, be cautious if you're coming from the northwest, as the road becomes a bit narrow near the end. The parking area is spacious and free.
El Charco Azul
As mentioned, the area is well-equipped with several amenities such as changing rooms, showers (0.5€), a snack bar, and umbrellas. The pool also features railings and stairs to help you get in and out. One of the highlights is a jet of water in the pool that resembles a waterfall, as well as several jumping spots from heights of 1-3 meters outside the pool. Some parts of the pool are deep enough that you won’t touch the bottom.
Although there is a lifeguard on duty, swimming is not recommended during high tides with strong waves, as it can be dangerous. The waves might enter the pool and sweep you out. For this reason, a second pool with a smoother bottom has been created further from the ocean, providing a safer option for young children.
It’s a relatively small place, but it’s not overly crowded. The abundance of services and its family-friendly setup make it a popular weekend spot for families with kids.
Next to the pool is another natural pond called Charco de Las Damas. This charco is much more exposed to the waves than Charco Azul, so caution is advised. Nearby, you’ll also find La Aldea distillery, which you can visit.
Nearby
In the surroundings, you will find other natural pools similar to these. These are La Fajana pools, and they are only a 15-minute drive away.
It’s a good spot for a swim, thanks to the convenient amenities.
