The Citadel of Hanoi, also known as the Imperial city Thang Long, has been Vietnam’s political and military center for over a thousand years and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has an old and vibrant history.
The access to the Citadel is from here. The cost is 30,000 VND and you have the option to take a guided tour for an additional fee. You can visit the enclosure in 30 minutes for a quick look. However, you can easily spend a few hours exploring every building.
There are some exhibition rooms with many artifacts that have been found. These museums have explanations in English. You can also visit the E67 bunker, which was used as the headquarters of the People's Army of Vietnam during the reconquest of Hanoi. Some other buildings are partially destroyed but still fascinating to visit.
Graduation celebrations occasionally take place in the citadel. Many students dressed in traditional clothing take pictures and stroll around the park.
It’s a popular place for tourists, so it tends to be crowded. However, as it’s a vast enclosure, the crowds will not overwhelm you.
It’s an essential place in the history of Vietnam; you will learn a lot about it.
