La Cangreja waterfall is located in Rincón de la Vieja National Park, in Guanacaste. The entrance fee is 17$.
The park is divided in two sectors: Las Pailas and Santa María. The waterfall is on the first one. The roads are quite good, you can make it even with a Fiat Punto. The drawback of it is that you have to pay a toll because it has been built by Hacienda Guachipelin (1$).
The way to the waterfall is a 5 km hike. The difficulty is medium. You will pass by a forest with incredible trees (huge roots and strange trunks) with a lot of shade, and also by a very open and dry area. It will take you around 2 hours to reach the waterfall. The path is accessible from 8AM till 12AM, however, I strongly recommend you to check it before you go. There might be modifications in the schedule due to the rains.
At half way there is a fork. If you take the right path you will visit La Escondida waterfall. This hike is very intense and difficult because of the steep path.
On the way you may find a wide variety of butterflies, some captive deers or a herd of wild boars.
The color of the waterfall is very special as a consequence of the minerals coming from the Rincón de la Vieja volcano. Swimming is not allowed, however, there was no “guardian” around.
It's not popular at all.
If you are not in a rush, you can also make the circular hike of Las Pailas, on this sector as well. You will see many volcanic activity spots.
The waterfall is beautiful. If you have paid the entrance and you have time, it’s worth it.
