The Venado caves are located 50 minutes by car from la Fortuna. These caves were formed 15-20 million years ago. The cave is divided into 12 different zones. if you are claustrophobic, better you go to visit waterfalls or the Arenal lake.

They are located in a private farm (surprise) so you will have to pay entrance fees. The price includes waterproof boots, a helmet and a guided visit. You need to book in advance.and the whole experience lasts more or less 2 hours. You can book it through the contact attached above.

The roads to the caves are more or less in a good state but you will pass by some unpaved sections. Don’t worry, even with a Fiat Punto you can make it. You can park for free in the farm.

Along the route, you will see stalactites, stalagmites, chorals, a waterfall (yes, within the cave) and even underground rivers. The itineray contains some tricky and narrow sections that might generate claustrophobic feelings but an easier alternative is always available. You will have to crawl, creep or even climb to progress through various segments, always with the help of a guide. Don’t worry, as I have said, you always have the option to avoid difficult parts.

Regarding concurrency...it’s not a very popular spot, however, a travel agency might have booked the experience for some clients on the same day… in that case, you might be added to a big group (up to 20 people). If you are lucky, you might be alone with the guide.

In the cave you can find spiders, amblypygi, fossils and four different species of bats..

I strongly recommend you to wear the boots lent by the property, and you should also carry an old t-shirt and a swimsuit. You will be full of mud and will swim in small rivers full of bat shit.

After finishing the trail, you can have a shower at the farm (quite necessary to be honest)

There is a swimming pool which is also included in the price, but it was empty when we visited the place.

Next to the parking, there is a restaurant where you will be able to order the typical costarican casado (let them know in advance).

The difficult paths are interesting. The price is a bit high, but if you are into speleology is worth it.
