Poza Los Coyotes is located in Guanacaste, 15 and 20 minutes by car from Curubande and Liberia respectively. It’s within a private farm, so you will have to pay 2000 CRC as an access fee. The property extends no more than 1 km along the river, therefore you have all the attractions concentrated in a rather small area.
You can access the main spot (Canyon/Cave) from two different private farms. Each farm calls the place in a different way, however, it’s the same spot. On one side of the river it 's called “Poza de los Coyotes”, while on the other one, “Poza La Angostura”. Both of them have access to the Poza/Cave, yet you will be able to visit much more incredible places by accessing it from the farm “Poza Los Coyotes”.
You will have to drive through a gravel road and cross a narrow and shallow river. Don’t worry, any vehicle can make the trip to the final location, even a Fiat Punto. At the farm there is a parking lot where you can leave the car.
Once parked, you will see three different paths. The most famous spot of the place is located at the end of the path on the right (downstream of the river), and this is the Canyon/Cave. It’s an area with low currents, quite deep, where you can jump into the water from some rocks (up to 10m high) and swim through an impressive narrow canyon.
The second path takes you to the middle part of the river. It is a very picturesque area. You can’t swim here due to the strong currents and the rock formations, but the landscape is breathtaking, a small gorge with mini waterfalls.
The last path will take you upstream of the river, where you will find many spots to rest in the shade along the water. You can also rent a floater and go down the river carried along by a light current. At the end, you will find a kind of lake where you can safely exit the water.
The high concentration of minerals due to the surrounding volcanic activity give the water a smerald color that is worth mentioning.
It’s not a touristic place. Normally, it’s frequented by locals and it’s not very busy. You don’t need to book in advance.
There is no time limit, after paying 2000 CRC you can spend the whole day there.
There are some areas with trees that will give you shade.
It’s extremely cheap for what it offers. A hidden gem.
Comment if you have any question!
