Kritama is a fine-grained sandy beach tucked behind a small cliff. The challenging access keeps it unknown and remote, ensuring its beauty remains untouched.
It’s located on the south coast of Crete, a 25-minute drive from Chora Sfakia and 1 hour and 15 minutes from Rethymno. The only way to reach it is by boat or by carefully descending through a hidden and steep path.
The roads are good, so you can make it even with a Fiat Punto. You can leave the car on the side of the road (here). Look for a dirt path on the right (there might be a fence blocking the path; simply open, pass and close it), then follow this trail. Soon, you'll come across a narrow path on the left leading to the beach (around here). Be careful as it’s rough, steep and not very stable.
The rocks contain clay, so you can mix them with water and enjoy a natural mud bath. Your skin will feel soft afterward. Although the mud will protect you from the sun, don’t forget a hat and sunscreen, as you will not find any shade there.
As it was said before, It’s very isolated. It’s not connected to anything so there are hardly ever people there. You could only run into a small group from a private boat excursion. Apart from this, a couple of braves from the nudist resort located at the neighboring beach could also venture into the water and reach it by swimming or kayaking. But as we have said, it’s not very likely.
It’s a magical place. Completely worth it.
