Mili gorge is located only a few kilometers away from Rethymno, which makes it convenient for a half day excursion in the nature. The gorge is 2.5 km-long with a height difference of about 200 meters. On average, it takes around 2 hours to walk it both ways (but it can last longer if you decide to explore the area).

It is accessible through two different entrances, a few hundred meters away from each other: the entrance n°1 (or West trailhead) and the entrance n°2 (or South trailhead). There is no proper parking lot associated with the gorge, so visitors usually park along the road. Be aware that the number of visitors can be very high in the summer so it might be difficult to find a spot if you arrive during rush hours. Try to arrive early so you will avoid the buses from organized trips.

Starting from any of these two points, the hike will be downwards. The gorge is renowned for its lush green forest, its rare flora, and the presence of many ruins of old Cretan housings, covered by dense vegetation.
Indeed, the gorge used to host the hamlets of Pano Mili and Kato Mili, abandoned in the 70s’. Besides, you will see ruins of a Venetian rural villa from the 17th century. Among those buildings, the most interesting one is probably the restored old water mill and the aqueducts connected to it. Those infrastructures are emblematic of the rural lifestyle of most of the Cretans before the industrial revolution reached the island. The gorge also has a few small churches that are still active along the path.

The walk is very easy, safe, and suitable for children. The area is also a popular spot for picnics so you will find tables, benches, and trash bins along the way. Water runs down the gorge throughout the year, offering small waterfalls and ponds where visitors can take a refreshing dip. Keep in mind that the access to some parts of the gorge might be difficult if the water level is too high, typically in early spring.

There is a café with a beautiful terrace a little after the entry of the gorge, and another small restaurant called “Cantina Banana” at the very end of the path (North trailhead). The latter is worth the visit for its delicious coffee, fresh juices, cats, and peaceful terrace bordered with banana trees. If you don't want to make the uphill return hike, the owner can call a taxi to take you back to where you parked your car (approximately 15-20 euros for the ride).

If you are looking for a half day activity close to Rethymno, the Milli Gorge is a great option, especially during the summer when its shade and pleasant temperature make it very popular among tourists and locals.
