A Saltwater Lake in Crete - Voulolimni Beach

Voulolimni natural pool is a crater connected to the sea that creates a natural salt lake. The rocks around it offer a good protection against the waves and wind, giving the impression of being in a pool.

It's located at the south-west coast of Crete, 1h 20’ from Chania and 10’ from the popular Elafonissi beach by car. The roads are good. The last section (2 minutes) is on a dirt road, but you can make it even with a Fiat Punto. There is a small dirt parking area in front of the lake (here).

You can find some small fish and fire-worms while snorkeling. It’s not something spectacular. In order to get in the water, you can descend down a small ramp. Bear in mind that the rocky bottom might be slippery and might hurt your feet, so wearing water shoes is recommended. You can also jump from some rocks into the lake (2-4 meters high). Mind the depth.

There is an area with trees providing shade, a table and benches to rest. Apart from this, the rocky surface of the surroundings is not very comfortable, there is no sand.

There are no kiosks nor bars around, so bring your own water and snacks. Although it’s near Elafonissi, it’s not popular at all. You might be alone.

If you are planning to go to Elafonisi, don’t hesitate to stop on the way at this hidden natural pool that will be an ideal spot for a more private swim, off the touristic routes.
